Scores of boys in Philippines showed up for what has been described as a ‘circumcision party’ providing a safe but free procedure for this rite of passage common to local males in the area.
Makeshift tables were used for the operations inside a sports stadium in Marikina City east of Manila the independent Asia reported.
Some cried for their moms as many of them awaited their turn outside the stadium.
Officials were quoted as saying the circumcision party aimed at promoting safe circumcisions to the poor which would otherwise cost $40 in private hospitals.
A city health officer, Dr. Alberta Herreira, said nearly 1,500 boys aged nine had been circumcised by midday and many more were still waiting.
Fox News reported that the city is also trying to establish a world record for the number of people attending the circumcision.
"We applied for the Guinness Book of World Records and we are recording everything so we can send all the data to them and hopefully it will be recognized," Vice Mayor Jose Fabian Cadiz was quoted as having said.
According to the Seatle Times, preadolescence and adolescent are traditionally circumcised during summer school break from March to May.
The online publication further reports that crude methods are sometimes used by non-doctors in rural areas.
