Rob Lowe has been in the acting biz since he was 15. He's gone from teen idol to one of Hollywood's top stars with a few bumps in the road. He tells all in his new memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography.
Rob Lowe was the pretty boy of the 1980's in movies like St. Elmo's Fire and The Outsiders. He hung out with Hollywood's elite dating a slew of the most beautiful actresses in town including Melissa Gilbert, Demi Moore, Nastassja Kinski and Princess Stéphanie.
Today Lowe, 47, is a devoted father to Matthew, 17, and Johnowen, 14. He confessed that the boys have both read their father's memoir but only “under duress” when Oprah Winfrey wanted them to talk about it for her show.
The Vancouver Sun quotes Lowe saying that they were not that impressed by their famous father, “They were like, ‘Oh, Dad. Come on.’ I am lucky if I can get them interested in anything that I am doing at this point.”
His boys may not be impressed but those who read about their dad's adventures in Hollywood from the hard partying to the beautiful women to the scandals and alcoholism just might be.
Lowe spent his early years in Malibu after his mother moved the family there from Ohio in the 1970's. He became close friends with Martin Sheen's boys, Charlie and Emilio. The good life in Malibu wasn't always so great. As a teen he lost two friends while still in school. One of the boys snorted rat poison thinking it was cocaine dying instantly and the other lost control of a 10-speed, impaled his head on a eucalyptus tree and bled to death reports the Washington Post.
Years later in 1986 Rob and Charlie would go on a party spree in New York while Lowe was working on “Masquerade” and Sheen was starring in “Wall Street.”
Don't expect steamy sex adventures in Lowe's memoir. He does talk about the women but without any R-rated details.

“For me the book was in terms of my romantic life more about my journey to getting where I got with Sheryl,” he says.
He does talk about his personal scandals, including the sex tape with two women, one under aged, he made the night before the Democratic National Convention in 1988 that almost sunk his career. During the dark days that followed only actress Jodie Foster and producer Don Simpson reached out to him.
Those dark days took place when Lowe was living a party hard life style. Just two years later he would come to terms that he was an alcoholic.
“I am an alcoholic,” he says matter-of-factly. “I have been sober for 20 years. It will be 21 years on May 10. If I had been a lawyer or a doctor or a tennis pro, I probably would have had very similar issues.”
His life and career changed when he gave up the bottle leading him to become one of Hollywood's top small screen stars with roles in The West Wing, Brothers and Sisters and his current starring position on Parks and Recreation.
Lowe's story at this mid point in his life shows how love triumphs all. He has been happily married to makeup artist Sheryl Berkoff since 1991.
