article imageNBA: Mavs take 2-0 lead in the series with 93-81 win over Lakers

Los Angeles - The Mavs came from behind to win game one in Staples Center against the Lakers. Game two the Lakers needed to even things out with a win, but Mavericks had different plans with Dirk Nowitzki leading his team to a 93-81 victory.
The Dallas Mavericks (57-25) have been in this situation before being up 2-0, back in the 2006 NBA Finals when they were playing the Miami Heat. The Mavs ended up losing that series 4-2 as the Heat went on to win the championship. Maybe the Los Angeles Lakers (57-25) think this can happen for them. The Lakers hosted the Mavs for game two on this seven game series last night.
Los Angeles jumper to a 10-6 lead behind two Kobe Bryant Jumpers. DeShawn Stevenson made a three-pointer to get the Mavs within one-point. Pau Gasol made a free-throw to make it 13-9, but Stevenson made another three-pointer to get the Mavs back within one. Jason Kidd then made a three-pointer to give the Mavs a 15-13 lead.
Andrew Bynum made a layup and a dunk to keep the Lakers close, but the Mavs were up by one-point. Shawn Marion made a layup after a Brendan Haywood block to give the Mavs a 21-18 lead. Kobe Bryant made a pair of free-throws, but the Dirk Nowitzk ended with a 5-0 spurt. Nowitzki made a jumper and three-pointer to give the Mavs a 26-20 lead to close out the quarter.
Peja Stojakovic opened the second quarter with a jumper to give the Mavs an eight-point lead. The Lakers got within four-points after back-to-back buckets from Andrew Bynum and Shannon Brown. Jason Terry made a jumper to give the Mavs a 32-24 lead. The Lakers went on a 6-2 spurt to get the Lakers within three-points, 33-30.
Jose Barea made a pair of layups to get the Mavs back up by seven. The Lakers scored the next ten points that included six points from Kobe Bryant to give them 40-37 lead. Jason Terry made a technical free-throw to get the Mavs within two-point, and Jason Kidd made a pair of free-throws to tie the game up. Dallas and Los Angeles baskets down the stretch with the Mavs coming out on top with a 51-49 lead going into halftime.
The game was tied at 49 points after Ron Artest made a jumper, but Dirk Nowitzki made a jumper to give the Mavs the lead.
Los Angeles got within one-point to start the third quarter with a Ron Artest free-throw. Tyson Chandler then made a layup and DeShawn Stevenson banked in a three-pointer that gave the Mavs a 56-50 lead. Paul Gasol got a dunk to get the Lakers within two-points. Derek Fisher made a layup to get within one-point, 57-56.
Dirk Nowitzki made a three-pointer to give the Mavs a 60-56 lead. The Lakers cut the lead back to two-points with a Kobe Bryant jumper. The Mavs finished the quarter with a 4-2 spurt that gave them a six-point lead going into the final quarter.
Jason Terry made a three-pointer during a 6-3 spurt that gave the Mavs a ten-point lead to start the fourth quarter. Lamar Odom made a hook shot for the Lakers that cut the Mavs lead to nine. Jose Barea came in and changed the game as he broke down the Lakers defense to lead the Mavs to a 79-69 lead after Brendan Haywood made a dunk of one of his assists.
Jason Kidd made a three-pointer and Jose Barea made a layup to give the Mavs an 84-69 lead. Kobe Bryant made a pair of free-throws to get the Lakers within 11-points. With 2:50 left in the game Dirk Nowitzki hit a turnaround fad away jumper while getting fouled by Pau Gasol. Nowitzki completed the three-point play that gave the Mavs an 87-73 lead.
Kobe Bryant answered with a three-pointer to try and cut into the Mavs lead. Shawn Marion made three free-throws in a row to give the Mavs a 90-76 lead with .33 seconds left. Ron Artest made a three-pointer with .26 seconds left.
Jason Terry made the technical free-throw and Jose Barea made his free-throws to pretty much seal the game.
Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks with 24 points and seven rebounds. Shawn Marion scored 14 points with nine rebounds. Jason Kidd scored 10 points with six assist.
Jason Terry came off the bench to score 12 points.
Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 23 points and five steals. Andrew Bynum scored 18 points with 13 rebounds, and Pau Gasol scored 13 points with 10 rebounds. Ron Artest scored 11 points and six rebounds before being ejected.
With the Mavs now up 2-0 the series switches to Dallas where they will play Friday, May 8, 2011 at 9:30 PM(EST).
The game got chippy when Ron Artest fouled Jose Berea by close lining him. Berea was dibbling up the court being guarded by Lamar Odom, and Artest came out of nowhere and hit him across the face. Artest tried to show some compassion by holding him up, but the Mavs and tv analyst called it un-called for.
