One Muslim cleric, Omar Bakri Mohammed, a radical cleric in Lebanon, is saying that the sea burial of Osama Bin Laden was a way for Americans to humiliate Muslims. Others however are saying that the White House showed wisdom in the burial of Bin Laden.
The burial at sea is causing some in the Muslim world to say that the United States humiliated Muslims with the disposal of Bin Laden in the water. While it is clear that no nation would accept the body of the terrorist questions are arising over the quick decision to bury him at sea.
According to CNN the burial took place in the Arabian sea at 2:10 a.m. ET. The burial was performed with Islamic rites. Bin Laden's body was placed in a white sheet, put on a flat board and then tipped up so that the body was allowed to slide into the sea.
Mohammed says that the sea burial is sure to stoke rage among some Muslims.
From a cleric in Iraq CKNW AM 980 reports, "If a man dies on a ship that is a long distance from land, then the dead man should be buried at the sea," said Shiite cleric Ibrahim al-Jabari. "But if he dies on land, then he should be buried in the ground, not to be thrown into the sea. Otherwise, this would be only inviting fish to a banquet."
Mohammed al-Qubaisi, Dubai's grand mufti said that instead of a sea burial Bin Laden could have been buried on a remote island with the traditional prayers when no one would accept his body reports 610 CKTB.
"Sea burials are permissible for Muslims in extraordinary circumstances," he added. "This is not one of them."
Not all clerics are condemning the sea burial. Mohammed Qudah, a professor of Islamic law at the University of Jordan, said "The land and the sea belong to God, who is able to protect and raise the dead at the end of times for Judgment Day. It's neither true nor correct to claim that there was nobody in the Muslim world ready to receive Bin Laden's body."
