article imageMayweather Risks Losing Ring's No.2 Pound- for-Pound Ranking

By Leo Reyes     Apr 28, 2011 in Sports
Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. has only until May 1 to sign up for a fight or he risks losing his No.2 spot in the Ring's pound for pound rankings.
Nigel Collins, Editor-in-Chief of Ring Magazine told the Philippine Daily Inquirer Mayweather will be removed from the pound for pound ranking if he does not sign up for a fight by May 1, which is the month and day he fought Shane Mosley last year.
Collins said “If that happens, he won’t be reinstated in either of the ratings until after he fights again.”
He said “Where Floyd would fit at that point, is difficult to say. A win over low-level or undersized opponents would not earn him as high a spot as he now holds. It would take a clear-cut win over a high quality adversary to accomplish that.”
Collins also indicated that it would also be “difficult to know exactly how the pound-for-pound ratings will look without Mayweather", the Inquirer report added.
Meanwhile, in a hearing set for Thursday at the Clark County court on his felony domestic violence charge involving Josie Harris, mother of Mayweather's children, court officials said the hearing is being postponed again and Mayweather isn't expected to appear on Thursday.
"The case is separate from a misdemeanor battery case alleging the 34-year-old Mayweather poked a homeowner association security guard in the face during a November argument outside his home," kntv.com reports.
"If convicted of the battery charge, Mayweather faces a six-month jail sentence and a $1,000 fine", the report added.
It appears Floyd Mayweather is not fighting anytime soon as talks on his possible tune up fight has not gained ground. Names mentioned for his tune up fight include Paul Spadafora, Victor Ortiz and Miguel Cotto.
Should Mayweather finally be stripped of his pound for pound ranking by May 1, he can still capitalize on his being undefeated on record in promoting his future fights
