Los Angeles - Kobe Bryant was questionable for this game after he rolled his ankle in game four. With Kobe hurt the Hornets looked like they could have an advantage, but the Lakers played a great team game to pull off the 106-90 victory to take the series lead.
The Los Angeles Lakers (57-25) hosted the New Orleans Hornets (46-36) for game five of this seven game series. The Hornets pulled the 93-88 victory in game four to even things up, and could have taken home court advantage for game six.
The Hornets jumped out to a 7-4 lead with a Trevor Ariza three-pointer. Derrick Fisher and Ron Artest made a three-pointer during an 8-4 spurt that gave them a 12-11 lead. Trevor Ariza made a three-pointer to tie the game up at 14 points apiece.
Marco Belinelli gave the Hornets a 23-19 lead with 2:51 left in the period. Andrew Bynum made a pair of free-throws to get the Lakers within six points. The Hornets went on a 5-2 spurt to take a 32-23 lead.
The Lakers bounce back in the second quarter with Shannon Brown knocking down back-to-back three-pointers to get them within one 32-31. The Lakers took a quick lead when Kobe Bryant made a jumper, but William Green had a dunk to give the Hornets the lead back 36-35.
Kobe Bryant tied the game up with a jumper at 38 points apiece. Trevor Ariza gave the Hornets the lead back with a three-pointer to make it 41-38. New Orleans had a 44-40 lead after Kobe fouled Ariza while he was going to the basket and completed the three-point play.
The Lakers got a spark from Kobe Bryant when he went up to dunk on Emeka Okafor with 3:31 left in the half. Bryant got the ball at the top of the key from Pau Gasol and he drove down the lain and slammed it with one hand over Okafor. The Lakers ended the half with a 54-51 after another Kobe dunk.
Derek Fisher made a three-pointer to open the third quarter to give the Lakers a 57-51 lead. Kobe Bryant made a bucket to give them a 65-55 lead. Marco Belinelli made back-to-back three-pointers to get the Hornets within five, 67-62.
The Lakers called a timeout as they lead 71-64, and bounced back to take a 75-65 lead. Trevor Ariza made back-to-back three-pointers to get the Hornets back within five 76-71 with 1:44 left in the period. The Lakers got a late free-throw from Derek Fisher to end the period with a 79-72 lead.
The Lakers started the final period going to the free-throw line three times to take a 85-74 lead. Los Angeles had a 13-6 to open the final period to take a 92-78 lead before they took a timeout. The teams traded free-throws for part of the final period as the Lakers came out on top up 96-81.
The Hornets could not bounce back from the 101-85 deficit. The Lakers closed out the game with Shannon Brown making a pair of free-throws, and Lamar Odom making a three-pointer to seal the deal for the Lakers. Patrick Ewing Jr. got his first action of the series and made a three-pointer to put the Hornets at the 90 point mark.

Trevor Ariza led the Hornets with 22 points, and Marco Belinelli had a nice game to add 21 points. Chris Paul scored 22 points with 12 assists.
The Lakers got a balanced attack as all the starters for them scored in double-digits. Kobe Bryant scored 19 points to lead them, and Andrew Bynum had 18 points with 10 rebounds. Pau Gasol scored 16 points with eight rebounds. Derek Fisher scored 13 points and Ron Artest chipped in with 11 points.
Lamar Odom came off the bench to score 13 points with seven rebounds.
The Los Angeles Lakers now own a 3-2 lead and can close the game out on the Hornets floor Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 8:00 PM (EST). If the Hornets can pull of a win they will force a game seven that will be played at the Staples Center.
