Obama was with the First Lady and children Sasha and Malia and were seen clapping to the 120-strong choir at the Shiloh Baptist Church.
Worshipers have taken the opportunity to take photos of the First Family during the Church service, prompting the priest to remind them about the purpose of the service.
"We are here first and foremost to worship God," one reverend said.
President Obama's religion has been widely discussed during his political campaign for the US presidency and questions on whether he is a Muslim or Christian have been asked many times over.
The president prefers to keep his personal faith private. In interview last year with an NBC News anchor, Obama denies he is a Muslim
as he addressed a Pews Survey results which disclosed that so many Americans believed him to be a Muslim
At the National Prayer Breakfast in February he said
, “My Christian faith has been sustaining for me over the last couple of years and even more so when Michelle and I hear our faith questioned from time to time.”
During the Church service, Obama was requested to speak but declined the invitation.
