Los Angeles - It was an American Idol week that featured 'A Night at the Movies' and songs associated with iconic films, but it wasn't the night for Paul McDonald who found himself in the bottom three, failing to receive enough votes to move him into next week's Top 7.
The Top 8 American Idol contestants received a visit this week from Rob Reiner, who explained to them what it took for a hit song to become an even bigger sensation when paired with a movie that later becomes a classic to film buffs.
Contestants chose songs that ranged from Paul McDonald's performance of "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger, made even more famous by Tom Cruise's performance in the movie "Risky Business" to James Durbin's high energy version of "Heavy Metal" by Sammy Hagar from the movie "Heavy Metal."
While the judges were impressed by Durbin they weren't as enthusiastic about McDonald's performance. McDonald has entertained fans each week with quirky performances of songs by Rod Stewart, Elton John as well as Bob Seger. His popularity in the weekly voting was assisted by the readers of the blog 'Vote for the Worst' who selected him to receive their votes this season, as he attempted to dance his way into the hearts of America to become the winner of American Idol's Season 10.
Vote for the Worst said in their campaign for McDonald: "The dancing, the voice, the clothes... We couldn't ask for anything more! But this week their fan support wasn't enough as McDonald was shown the exit door after the votes were announced by host Ryan Seacrest.
Joining McDonald in the bottom three this week, according to Facebook online votes and telephone polls, were Idols Haley Reinhart and Stefano Langone, who made repeat appearances at the bottom after the votes were tallied.
But it was McDonald who found himself with the least number of votes. McDonald granted Jennifer Lopez's request for one more performance of the Rod Stewart hit Maggie May from the aging, compared to the teenagers remaining on the program, contestant before the nightly show ended.
The best performance of the night, judged by audience applause, came from Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson who sang Don't You Wanna Stay, a song the duo have previously performed together on live television at last year's Academy of Country Music awards.
Rihanna was also a guest on this week's airing of American Idol. She promoted her upcoming concert with a performance of her hit song California King Bed.
When the votes were announced, Idol contestants who remained safe were Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina, Jacob Lusk, Casey Abrams, Haley Reinhart, James Durbin and Stefano Langone.
With the departure of McDonald from the show, and Pia Toscano who was eliminated last week, seven contestants remain to compete for their shot at becoming Season 10's American Idol.
If you missed this week's episode, video's of each performance can be viewed on the official American Idol website.
