Toronto - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party are maintaining a comfortable lead over Michael Ignatieff and the Liberal Party ahead of Tuesday's English debates and with less than three weeks until voters head to the polls.
Since the Canadian federal election was called late last month, polling companies have continually showed strong numbers for Stephen Harper and his Conservatives. Meanwhile, Michael Ignatieff’s Liberals and Jack Layton’s New Democrats have remained in the same polling figures.
According to the latest Nanos Research poll conducted exclusively for CP24, CTV and the Globe and Mail, the Conservatives are holding a strong nine-point lead ahead of Tuesday night’s English debates.
With the federal election campaign at the halfway point, where do the parties and their leaders stand in the polls? The Tories are polling at nearly 40 percent, while the Grits are in second place with 31 percent. The NDP is sitting at third with close to 17 percent support and the Bloc Quebecois was polled at almost eight percent.

One political pollster believes Tuesday’s debates will be absolutely important for all of the federal leaders because they can influence television audiences. The federal leaders have to surpass expectations and not make errors.
“The debates are key junctures in the campaign because many Canadians tune in earnest to size out and check out all of the federal party leaders,” said Nik Naos, reports CTV News. “But realistically, it's about two things: exceeding expectations and not making mistakes.”
The pre-debate telephone survey was conducted among 990 Canadian adult voters between Apr. 9 and Apr. 11. The poll contains a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points.
Digital Journal will be hosting a liveblog of the federal leaders’ debate Tuesday night. The debate will feature Harper, Ignatieff, NDP leader Jack Layton and Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe.
Canadians head to the polls on May 2. Be sure to follow Digital Journal’s Canada Election 2011 coverage.
