Raleigh - A recent poll conducted by Public Policy Polling (PPP) shows that 46 percent of Mississippi Republicans are in favor of outlawing interracial marriage.
The Mississippi Republican Poll conducted March 24-27 also showed that 40 percent of respondents felt that interracial marriage should be legal with 14 percent of those surveyed not sure.
It is important to note the demographic of those polled. Sixty-eight per cent of the survey's respondents were over the age of 46, and 32 per cent were over the age of 65. Only 12 percent of those polled were between the ages of 18-29.
The poll showed 76 percent of respondents considered themselves somewhat or very conservative.
According to the Daily Mail the 2010 Census by the Census Bureau shows that mixed race populations are growing beyond demographers predictions, particularly in the South and Midwest with the state of Mississippi leading the pack.
It wasn't until 1967 that interracial marriage became legal in Mississippi as well as other southern states when the U.S. Supreme Court overruled the state's laws.
