article imageCancer patient foils bank robber in Florida

By KJ Mullins     Apr 4, 2011 in Crime
When Helen Dunsford went to an Oakland Park, Florida branch of Bank of America Friday she didn't expect to become a hero. The cancer patient is credited for tackling a woman who tried to rob the bank.
Dunsford told local media that she had nothing to lose when she tackled a female robbery suspect Friday morning.
The suspect had gone to the front of the line with her hand inside her purse. She demanded $10,000 telling the bank teller she had a gun. The suspect then told everyone in the bank to lay on the ground. That order didn't go over very well with Dunsford who has terminal cancer. Instead of laying down she tackled her to the ground and held her there until officers from Broward County Sheriff's Office arrived.
MSNBC reports:
"She got on my last nerve," Dunsford said. "I have cancer, stage 4, and I figured if I'm gonna die it's God will when I die. She's not gonna shoot me."
Ms. Dunsford has been requested to not comment by the F.B.I. on Friday's incident.
The suspect, Renee Breen, is in custody. The Daily Mail reports that she is claiming that the robbery was really an April Fool's joke. The F.B.I. is handling the investigation.
