Hamilton - A train derailment between Cobourg and Port Hope in Hamilton Township resulted in 20 homes being evacuated during the lunch hour Sunday.
At 12:20 p.m. a CN train derailed south of Theatre Road.
Emergency Management Ontario issued a Red Alert recommending persons immediately leave the area from Ward Street to the North in Hamilton Township, Lake Ontario to the South, Hamilton Road to the West, and Theatre Road South to the East. Residents were asked to only take basic clothing, medication, toiletry supplies and other essentials for several days absence. Residents were to take pets with them but not to pick up family members that were in schools, daycares and institutions such as hospitals and nursing homes. Plans are in place to deal with those institutions were already in place. The area is not allowed to be entered into until further notice.
A team from The Transportation Safety Board of Canada lead by Tom Griffith is investigating the incident.
Routes from Montreal-Toronto and Ottawa-Toronto were interrupted with alternate transportation in place for VIA passengers. No new bookings for those routes will be accepted until the situation has been cleared.
