article imageAmerican Idol thrills fans with double elimination

Los Angeles - American Idol fans were treated to a week that featured an Elton John extravaganza, a performance by Fantasia and the elimination of two contestants in a night that had viewers on the edge of their seat waiting to see if their favorite had made the cut.
A record 55 million votes were cast for the contestants who participated in this weeks round of American Idol, according to host Ryan Seacrest. That was 25 million more votes then the previous week and a new record for the popular show that added Facebook online voting to the mix this season.
Following a week that included the shocking save of Casey Abrams by the Idol judges and a move from the Idol mansion that reportedly had problems ranging from spiders to leaky roofs to ghostly apparitions, a thrilling double elimination was necessary to keep the hit show on track for the grand finale.
The Top 11 were asked to perform songs written by the legendary duo of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The contestants entertained the audience with Elton John hits that included Tiny Dancer, Candle in the Wind, a reggae version of I'm Still Standing performed Naima Adedapo and Scotty McCreery singing Country Comfort.
When the votes were tallied Idol contestants safe this week were McCreery, Pia Toscano, Lauren Alaina, Jacob Lusk, Casey Abrams, Haley Reinhart, James Durbin and Stefano Langone.
Thia Megia, Naima Adedapo and Paul McDonald received the lowest amount of Idol fan-cast votes.
McDonald is this years pick by the group 'Vote for the Worst', who according to Wikipedia are "devoted to voting for the worst, most entertaining, most hated or quirkiest contestants on the Fox Network television series American Idol." McDonald performed Rocket Man in his $4500 rhinestone suit that looked as if it came right out of Elton John's closet.
The suit wasn't enough to impress American Idol fans who failed to support him another week, landing him in the bottom three but with just enough votes to squeak past Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo when Seacrest read the final results.
Megia and Adedapo were eliminated but will join the American Idol tour this season which will include all the contestants who made the Top 11.
The nine remaining contestants will return next Wednesday night for another round of competition. If you missed this week's performances they can be viewed in their entirety on the American Idol website.
