Ajax - A parent's worse nightmare happened for an Ajax, Ontario family when their 19-month-old son fell down a flight of 10 stairs.
The child was being cared for by a 34-year-old male caregiver when the fall happened at about 8:30 p.m. Monday. Emergency services were called to the scene at Harwood Avenue and Kingston Road area of Ajax.
The child was not responsive at the scene and rushed to Rouge Valley Hospital. He was then airlifted to the Children for Sick Children in Toronto. The child is in stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery for a head injury.
Durham Regional Police are investigating the incident but do not suspect foul play.
Caregivers should take the necessary precautions to childproof their homes reminds Durham Police.
Covering electrical outlets, using safety gates and using toilet lid locks are important steps. Children are naturally curious making storing household chemicals on higher shelves or cabinets and keeping all medications out of children's reach vital. Anchoring down large furniture can prevent items falling on children.
