With upsets always looming when it comes to the NCAA basketball tournament, Morehead State gets the first one of the tourney. Number 13 Morehead St. pulled off a 62-61 win over number 4 Louisville to advance to the next round.
Kenneth Faried (12 points) scored the first points of the game for Morehead St with a free-throw at the 19:06 mark. The game stay stayed 1-0 until Sam Goodman (4 points) on a layup to make it 3-0 Eagles. Morehead St. scored the ten points of the game with Drew Kelly (2 points) scored on jumper to make it 10-0. Louisville finally scored at the 13:48 mark on a Gorgui Dieng (6 points) dunk to make it 10-2. The Eagles kept their foot on gas as they had a double-digit lead until Preston Knowles (9 points) made a 3-pointer to cut it to nine point lead.
Morehead St cooled off and Louisville made their run as they got it to five on a Preston Knowles 3-pointer, making it 25-20. The score was 27-23 in Morehead St’s favor, and Chris Smith (17 points) made a 3-pointer to cut it to one. The score was tied at 30 on a Gorgui Dieng jumper with just over a minute left. Kyle Kuric (9 points) hit a 3-pointer for the Cardinal to give them a 3-point lead, but Terrance Hill for the Eagles tied it up at the buzzer with a 3-pointer of his own.
Chris Smith led Louisville with 17 points to be the only player to score in double-digits. Kyle Kuric and Preston Knowles both scored nine points.
Morehead State only played seven players with three of them scoring in double-digits. Terrance Hill scored 20 points, Kenneth Faried scored 12 points and Ty Proffitt chipped in with 13 points.
The Eagles took a one point lead early on a Kenneth Faried free-throw. Chris Smith made a jumper for the Cardinals to give them the one point lead 35-34. Chris Smith made it 38-34 on a free-throw that capped Louisville’s 5-0 spurt. Ty Proffitt made a 3-pointer for the Eagles to get the lead to one at the 16:13 mark. Louisville hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make the score to make it a seven point lead.
Ty Proffitt and Terrace Hill hit back-to-back 3-pointers to get them within one at 48-47 with 8:26 left in the game. A pair of Terrance Hill free-throws at the 7:50 mark gave the Eagles a one point lead. The teams traded baskets to tie the game up at 52 points, and Terrance Hill made a 3-pointer to make it a five point lead for the Eagles. The Cardinals went on a 8-0 run that gave them a 61-57 lead with a minute left.
Kenneth Faried made a pair of free-throws to get the Eagles within one with .32 seconds left in the game. Louisville missed a free-throw on a one and one foul and Kenneth Faried got the rebound. Demonte Harper had the ball at the top of the key, and he crossed over to drain a 3-pointer to give the Eagles the lead and the win with just .7 seconds left. Harper was 0 for 5 from long range before the shot.
Louisville was outrebounded by Morehead St. 43-29.
Morehead State advanced to the round of 32 for the first time since the tournament expanded to 64 teams. A 13-seed defeated a 4-seed for the fourth straight tournament. A Big East team lost to a 13-seed for the third time in the round of 64.
