article imageNHL: Toews' three-point night leads Hawks past Wild

By Dustin Pollack     Mar 1, 2011 in Sports
The Chicago Blackhawks continue to climb the tight Western Conference standings picking up a 4-2 victory tonight against the Minnesota Wild.
For the Blackhawks it seems the victory couldn’t of come at a better time as going into tonight Chicago and Minnesota were two of four teams tied for seventh place in the Western Conference with 72 points each.
Hawks captain Jonathan Toews led the way offensively with a goal and two assists. His second helper came shorthanded with under two minutes left in the third period on a nifty cross-ice pass to a streaking Marian Hossa.
Patrick Sharp also added a goal in the win, giving him 33 on the season and putting him just three back of tying a career high of 36, which he accomplished back in the 2007-2008 season.
“We don't even feel like we're on a hot streak right now,” Jonathan Toews told the Associated Press. “We're taking it one game at a time, and every time we come up with two points — whether it's a shootout win or an even-strength win by a couple goals. It doesn't matter how we get it.”
While the Hawks forwards continue to put up numbers, the most recent stretch of wins could not have been put together without the goaltending from Corey Crawford. Chicago’s goaltender made 24 saves in tonight’s victory and is continuing to prove himself as a legitimate number one goaltender. He even has some considering him as a candidate for the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie.
“Everyone, especially on the road, we just keep it real simple,” Crawford told the Chicago Tribune. “We're not forcing anything. We're creating our opportunities down low and not giving the other team too much.”
The win against the Wild tonight is the Hawks' fifth in a row and puts them into sixth place in the Western Conference with only 19 games remaining in the regular season.
