Santiago - Chile remembered the 156 people killed in the earthquake and tsunami which took place on February 27 last year at the time a strong earthquake magnitude 6 Richter shook the southern regions of the country.
According to reports of Chile’s National Emergency Office (ONEMI) the quake occurred at 22:29 hours with no significant damage reported so far. The timing of this strong quake was sensitive and generated great alarm among the population of the affected areas because it happened on the same date, a few hours after, the country commemorated the anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that struck the country off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile on February 27, 2010, at 03:34 local time at a magnitude of 8.8 and lasting up to 3 minutes. The official count of casualties was updated by the government on January 31, 2011 and stands at 156 deaths and at least 25 disappeared.

Geological Survey indicated that the quake registered 6.0 on the Richter scale and had its epicentre located 37 kilometres south of the city of Concepción with a depth of 16.7 kilometres.
The tremor caused great panic and uncertainty among the population because of its duration and the interruption of electricity and phone communications in many areas of the south of Chile. Other essential services were not affected.
Earlier in the day and during the early hours of February 27, government authorities had gathered for emotive commemoration ceremonies at the town of Cobquecura in the Maule Region not far from the epicentre of the earthquake of Feb. 27, 2010.
