article imageNBA: Howard calls out team after disappointing 111-105 loss

By Kristofor Molson     Feb 25, 2011 in Sports
Orlando made a deal in the middle of the first half of the season after Dwight Howard called out his team, and after this loss he did it again. The only difference this time is the trade deadline has passed and Orland didn't strike a deal.
The Orlando Magic (35-22) hosted the Sacramento Kings (14-41) who are at the bottom of the West just above the Minnesota Timberwolves who are 13-35. You can see now why Dwight Howard got so mad with this loss. Orlando is sitting at the fourth spot with a chance to move up and be in the top three if they can get on a roll in the second half of the season.
The game started out with the Kings having a 10-4 lead before Nelson hit a jumper and Howard had a dunk to put them down by two, and had another dunk to tie it at 12. The Kings got the game tied at 14 before taking over the first quarter behind the play of Casspi and Taylor who knocked down two big 3-pointers late in the quarter. Their 3-pointers capped off the 17-11 run they made to get a 31-25 lead to end the period.
The second quarter started out bad for the Magic as the Kings continued to try and push their lead. The closest the Magic got early was six before the Kings went on another run to push their lead to eleven 46-35. Redick started a 13-2 run with a 3-pointer and hit another one during the run. Howard capped it off to tie the game at 48 with a dunk and Anderson got a dunk also to give them a two point lead.
Orlando had their biggest lead so far of the game when they went up by nine. They could not keep it that high as Jackson and Udrih made some shoots to go into halftime down 61-58.
Jermaine Taylor led the Kings in scoring with 21 points and Beno Udirh added 18 points and 10 assists. Omar Casspi had 13 points and eight rebounds with two steals. Jason Thompson scored 17 points with four rebounds, five assists, one steal and two blocks. They got good help off the bench, but Samuel Dalembert was the main guy with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Dwight Howard had a team high and game high 31 points and 17 rebounds with two steals and two blocks. Hedo Turkoglu was the second highest scorer with 19 points and Jameer Nelson chipped in with 15. J.J. Redick scored 12 off the bench going 2 of 4 from behind the arc and Ryan Anderson scored just nine as he went 1 of 6 from behind the arc.
The Magic shoot just 44.9% from the field as the Kings shoot a hot 52.5%. The Magic could not hit a 3-pointer going 8-28 for 28.6% and the Kings went 6-12 for 50.0%. The Kings also outrebounded them 42-36 and had more assists 30-21.
The Kings had more turnovers 19-17, but that had no effect on the game due to the Magic’s poor shooting.
The game was close in the beginning of the third as the Kings tied it up at 64 before the Magic went on 14-2 run to push their lead to ten at the 3:54 mark. Dalembert sparked the Kings on their comeback and Luther Head (8 points) knocked down a 3-pointer to put them down by five.
Taylor hit some free-throws to make it 77-80, but the Howard and Richardson made it 84-79 going into the final period.
The fourth was a battle for both teams as Howard scored six straight points to open the quarter. Casspi pushed the Kings ahead with a 3-pointer to make it 91-90. Anderson and Howard pushed Magic back ahead, but a Dalembert had a dunk to tie it up at 96.
The Kings went on a 14-9 run to close out the game and shut the Magic’s winning streak to two and giving the their second win in ten games this month.
After the game Howard slumped down in his locker and called out his teammates in a post game interview.
We've been talking for a long time all we seem to do is talk. You guys know what the difference is. You watch the games. If guys don't want to play, they need to sit down. We can't just have guys or anybody out there not playing hard. We're professional athletes. This is what we do for a living. If you can't go out there and go hard for two hours, then you shouldn't be playing.
