By Kristofor Molson     Feb 24, 2011 in Sports
New York - The Knicks made a deal to bring Carmelo Anthony home to New York, and in the press conference before the game he said it was good to be home. In his first game last night you could see just how good it was for him and the fans.
The New York Knicks (29-26) took on the Milwaukee Bucks (22-35) last night in Carmelo Anthony’s first game in historic Madison Square Garden, in a brand new number seven jersey and in front of a whole new crowd who chanted “Mello! Mello! Mello!” as he shot free-throws late in the game.
Melo was not the only new player donning a new jersey in a new arena last night. Chauncey “Mr. Big Shot” Billups put on a new jersey as well for the Knicks, but pulled out an old number to still show his Denver roots. Wearing the number four jersey is something Billups has wore since his days at George Washington High school to his days at the University Colorado, and his rookie year in 1997 when he wore it for the Boston Celtics.
The first quarter was began and the teams battled to tie the game up at four before Anthony got the rebound and scored his first points as a Knick on a dunk and Billups came down after a Bucks miss and knocked down 3-pointer for sixth team in 14 year career.
The Knicks took a 19-10 before they called a time out, and Delfino hit a 3-pointer and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (7 points) hit two free-throws to put them down by five with 4:42 left in the game. Both team kept the scoring going, but the Knicks ended the period with a 33-24 lead.
In the second quarter the Knicks pushed their lead to ten at 39-29 behind a Douglas layup. The Bucks tried to keep pace, but only got it down to eight before the Knicks called a timeout. After the timeout the Bucks got the Knicks lead down to one before tying it up 53. The Bucks kept it close for the rest of the period to go into the halftime down two with the Knicks leading 59-57.
John Salmons led the Bucks with 27 points and seven assists. Andrew Bogut had 14 points and 12 rebounds along with Carlos Delfino who also had 14 points. Brandon Jennings had 12 points, with Corey Maggette and Kenyon Dooling coming off the bench to score 13 points apiece.
Even though Carmelo Anthony had 27 points and 10 rebounds, Tony Douglas was the reason for the win with his hustle. Douglas had 23 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals off the bench. Chauncey Billups score 21 points going 12-12 from the free-throw line with four of them coming at the end of the game while the fans chanted his name as well.
Amare Stoudemire score 19 points with five rebounds, but fouled out and got hit with a technical for throwing his glasses down after his sixth foul.
Delfino gave the Bucks a one point lead to open the third quarter with a 3-pointer, and Bogut put them up by three before the Knicks went on an 8-0 spurt to take the lead 67-62. Salmons hit a three pointer at the 5:09 mark to knock the Knicks lead down to one, and forcing the Knicks to take a timeout. The Knicks then went on a 16-10 run to close out the third with the lead in a game that was battle for both teams so far. Douglas scored the last five points of the period, including a 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds left.
Both teams struggled in the opening of the fourth quarter to score with Melo hitting 3-pointer before the Bucks took a timeout. The Knicks led 91-82 and the Bucks ran off six straight points to get the down by three at the 6:09 mark. The Bucks tried to keep it close late in the quarter, but the acquisitions Melo and Billups kept them at bay after Stoudemire fouled out with a 1:42 left in the game.
The game was 102-106 after Salmons hit two free-throws, but Melo made a jumper off a Douglas assists. Salmons came out after the Bucks timeout and knocked down a jumper but Billups and Melo put the game on ice with free-throws.
Three of the Knicks new players Anthony Carter, Shelden Williams, and Corey Brewer did not even touch the court as the Knicks have won their third game in a row.
