article imageArkansas rocked by several mysterious small earthquakes this week

By Kev Hedges     Feb 18, 2011 in Environment
Guy - The US state of Arkansas has experienced a swarm of earthquakes over the past four days. On Friday more than a dozen small tremors have shaken parts of the state and no one appears to know why it's happening.
There was a quake this morning (Friday) measuring 3.2 on the Richter-scale and more than 50 have been recorded during the past month alone. A 3.8-magnitude was measured near Greenbrier around 0400EST and the area around Guy was also rocked with a small tremor during the week, reports local station KATV.
No injuries have been reported and no structures have been damaged. The quakes are too small for any widespread concern but the sheer quantity of quakes has led to much speculation. The area is subject to ongoing natural gas exploration or it could be a similar swarm, much like the one that hit Enola in Arkansas in the early 1980s.
The US Geological Survey records all earthquakes around the world, even small ones, and the Arkansas shakes have been a regular feature on the web site in the last few days.
