Stroud - Director Dale Vince, owner of Forest Green Rovers, a football team in the Blue Square Premier league in the UK, has banned the sale of burgers, sausages and cottage pies at the stadium.
Mr Vince had already introduced the ban to the players and team staff but has now extended it to everyone attending the ground during the club’s home matches at the 5,200-capacity New Lawn Stadium in Stroud, Gloucestershire.
The vegan who runs his own company Ecotricity, a green electricity supplier, has said: “If red meat was not good enough to feed our players, then it wasn’t good enough for our staff, fans and visitors too”. But the chairman insists that it is not a red meat ban, simply a ban on the sale of red meat in the ground, green website edie.net reports.
The club will still have free-range poultry and fish from sustainable stocks on its menu, as well as vegetarian food and the chairman says, “If you want to bring your own ham sandwiches along then that’s fine. At its worst it means once every two weeks watching a football game without being able to eat red meat.”
There is widespread belief that red meat production, due to various factors including methane and grazing methods, is not good for the environment, as reported in Mail Online.
