Senior outwits telephone scammer

By KJ Mullins     Feb 11, 2011 in Crime
A Seagrave, Ontario man, 84, still mourning the recent loss of his wife, was called this week by an unknown male to pay an outstanding bill that his wife had not paid prior to her death.
The caller asked for the man's personal credit card information but the wise man refused to give it out. Twice more the suspect called Wednesday trying to solicit funds.
The victim contacted a family member to report the suspicious activity. That call led to getting the Durham Regional Police involved.
"Police are warning all residents, especially seniors living alone, of the potential of this ongoing criminal activity. There is a possibility the suspect located the victim from his wife’s obituary notice in the newspaper. Never furnish your personal information including financial information to unknown persons and report all suspicious activity to police," states the DRPS.
