Bristol - Avon and Somerset Police have tonight charged a 32-year old Dutch national with the murder of Joanna Yeates whose body was found on Christmas Day.
Vincent Tabak, an architectural engineer, was this evening charged with murder following his arrest on Thursday and continued questioning since then.
Since Thursday a large forensic examination has taken place at Vincent Tabak's flat and it was revealed that he was in fact a neighbour of Jo Yeates and her boyfriend Greg Reardon.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Jones, who has led this investigation since it began, tonight said, "This evening we have charged Vincent Tabak with the murder of Joanna Yeates.
"I would like to pay tribute to Jo's family and Greg for their assistance and dignity in the most difficult of circumstances. Their support to us has been invaluable.
"I would also like to thank the general public for their help and the information they continue to provide to the investigation, and the residents of Canynge Road for their co-operation and patience."
Jo Yeates, 25, was reported missing on Sunday December 19 last year by her boyfriend Greg Reardon after he had returned from a weekend away. It emerged that Jo had not been seen since Friday December 17 when she had had drinks in Bristol with her friends and left them around 8PM.
Various CCTV shots allowed police to piece together parts of her final movements.
Her body was found on Christmas Day a few miles away by a couple out walking their dog.
Police had already made one arrest, that of Jo's landlord, but he was released after questioning.
Before Mr Tabak had been charged Jo's father, David had spoken to journalists and revealed that he wasn't aware of Jo or Greg knowing Vincent Tabak at all. He said, "As far as I know their paths never crossed."
Vincent Tabak is due to appear at Bristol's Magistrates Court on Monday 24 January.
