article imageNBA: Shaq puts on cape to lead Boston to Victory

By Kristofor Molson     Jan 15, 2011 in Sports
Boston - With the Boston Celtics (30 – 9) shorthanded, I guess superman had to step out the telephone booth and lead the Celtics to a victory.
Shaquille O’Neal looked like he had his cape on tonight to save the Celtics from the jaws of defeat by the Charlotte Bobcats (15 – 22).
With key injuries to Kevin Garnett (right leg muscle strain) and Jermaine O’Neal (sore left knee) Shaq was thrown back into the light and ran up and down the court like a champ for 35 minutes going 10/12 scoring 23 points and adding 5 rebounds with 5 blocks to finish the game.
Ray Allen and Paul Pierce both helped out with 19 points apiece. Rondo had his usual game with 13 assist but adding 18 points to help out while Paul Pierce sat most of the game with foul trouble. Allen did most of his damage in fourth quarter dropping eight of his 19 and sparking the Celtics 10-2 run that broke the game open for the “C’s”. The starting five had to put up big point tonight because they did not get much help from the bench who combined for 9 points, and those came from Daniels (4 points) and Robinson (5 points).
The Bobcats put up a good fight with Gerald Wallace leading the Bobcats with a team high 20 points and adding 6 rebounds. Stephen Jackson did not have a great game but he tried with 13 points. D.J. Augustine put up 19 points and dished out 6 assist to try and push the Bobcats to victory.
The Bobcats kept it close to the end but just could not finish the game. Coach Paul Silas said that the team has to come with a little bit more on the mental aspect of the game, and that is expected when you are playing a veteran team like the Celtics.
The Bobcats were on a four game winning streak when the rolled into the TD Banknorth Garden tonight. They started out 2 – 0 under Paul Silas who stepped in for Larry Brown on Dec. 27, but then dropped two before going on their four game winning streak. With the loose tonight the Bobcats have fallen to 6 – 3 now. They will have a tough match-up tomorrow when they welcome the New Orleans Hornets into Charlotte.
Playing Shaq for 35 minutes a night is not the norm but seeing they do not play again until Monday, so tonight was the best time for Shaq to have the kind of game he did let Doc Rivers tell it.
