article imageCheryl Cole and X Factor star are nominees in BRIT awards

By Andrew John     Jan 14, 2011 in Entertainment
Singer and talent show judge Cheryl Cole is among nominees, just announced, for this year’s prestigious BRIT awards. And sharing the honours is a singer she helped put on the international stage.
Cole has got two nominations: Best Female Solo Artist and Best British Single. She will be pitted against the Wanted and the runner-up in The X Factor in 2009, Olly Murs.
Cole was one of the four judges in the 2009 X Factor series, and so helped secure Murs his second place in the competition – and his subsequent rise to fame as a solo artist.
Coming in with four nominations is rapper Tinie Tempah. He’s vying for Best British Male Solo Artist, Best British Single, Best British Breakthrough Act, and British Album of the Year.
Plan B and Take That are also nominated in the British Album category.
“The rapper [Tempah] performed at the nominations announcement at the O2 [arena] in London, rapping his track ‘Wonderman’ with another rising star, Ellie Goulding, who is nominated for two awards, British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act,” says New! magazine.
“Also performing at the event were the Wanted and newcomer Jessie J, who has been named as the recipient of the Critic’s Choice BRIT Award this year.”
Alongside Tempah and Goulding as multi-nominees, says ITN, are Mumford & Sons, who gained great acclaim at the Glastonbury Festival last year.
“These three acts, who came to prominence in 2010, have fast established themselves as ones to watch on a global scale in 2011,” says the broadcaster’s website.
The writer, actor and creator of one of Britain’s best-loved sitcoms, James Corden will host this year’s awards ceremony. The O2 arena is hosting the event for the first time in its 30-year history.
Corden – who co-wrote and acted in the sitcom Gavin & Stacey – co-hosted the awards in 2009 with fellow Gavin & Stacey actor Matthew Horne and Aussie singer Kylie Minogue.
The awards this year will be on February 15.
