article imageNFL: Broncos Name Fox Their New Coach in Denver

By Kristofor Molson     Jan 13, 2011 in Sports
Englewood - The Broncos find a new coach to take over the rains from Josh McDainels who was let go last year after a laundry list of miscues which lead to the Broncos missing the playoffs and a 4 – 12 record on the season.
The man the Denver Broncos picked up is former Carolina Panthers coach John Fox. Fox was forced out of Carolina with his contract not renewed leaving him to be a “lame duck” coach in his final season. The season ended on a bad note with the Panthers’ sending Fox out with a lost to the Atlanta Falcons in week 16, but the upside of the season is they get the number one draft pick overall in this year’s NFL draft.
Fox at 55 years of age has had a list of colleges and NFL teams where he was the defensive back coach or defensive coordinator until he got to Carolina. The Panthers gave Fox his first NFL career head coaching job. He spent nine seasons with Carolina producing three winning seasons, two .500 seasons and four losing seasons to a overall 73 – 71 overall and a 5 – 3 playoffs record with a Super Bowl berth in 2003.
After three delayed flights out of North Carolina John Fox finally got the chance to arrive in Denver on Wednesday to meet with John Elway who is now the Broncos’ new chief football executive. Fox was not at the top of the Broncos’ wish list but his coaching resume speaks success with three playoff appearances in nine years.
Fox will have to deal with quarterback issues all over again as the he had to do in Carolina. Carolina had Jimmy Clausen who in his first year was not what the Panthers expected and the back-ups were not much either. The Broncos have their own quarterback trouble with Kyle Orton who was the starter until the last three games. There is Brady Quinn who McDaniels’ traded now Browns running back Peyton Hillis for a year ago. Finally he has Tim Tebow who was part of the reason for McDaniels’ exit out of Denver when he took Tebow in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Fox will fit in good with the Broncos but, we will just have to see what moves him and Elway will make to bring the Broncos back playoff contingency.
