article imageNFL: Browns get new head coach in Shurmur

By Kristofor Molson     Jan 13, 2011 in Sports
Cleveland - Pat Shurmur, the nephew of the late Fritz Shurmur has been named the new Cleveland Browns coach. The former offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams will bring his offensive mind to the Browns in hopes of returning the Browns to a winning tradition.
The Browns have had a track meet in hiring and firing coaches with Pat Shurmur now being the fifth coach in Browns history since their return to the NFL in 1999. The Browns have run through the likes of Chris Palmer (5 – 27), Butch Davis (24 – 34), Romeo Crennel (24 – 40) and Eric Mangini (10 – 22) who Shurmur will be replacing next season. Since returning 12 seasons ago the Browns have went 64- 128 with a winning percentage of .333 and only made 1 playoff appearance in 2002 under coach Butch Davis.
Shurmur is 45 years old and has been around the NFL for years coaching with the Eagles for 10 seasons before heading to the Rams for a year. Shurmur coached the Eagle’s tight ends and their quarterback, helping Donovan McNabb become the Pro Bowl quarterback he is today. Shurmur is known for preparing young quarterbacks in the NFL from the likes of Donovan to Sam Bradford and now Holmgren is looking for him to keep the success going in molding Colt McCoy to be the Browns franchise quarterback.
Holmgren said that there would be a very extensive search for the next head coach of the Browns, but word is Shurmur was his guy all along. Holmgren only interviewed a handful of candidates besides Shurmur, and the others where Atlanta’s offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey and New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. Names were thrown around like Jon Gruden and John Fox, but phone calls where as far they went.
We will see what moves the Browns will make this offseason to help their new coach get off on the right foot this next season. Both of them Holmgren and Shurmur know this is not a quick fix but Shurmur will make his best effort to make the Browns competitive again.
