David Tennant and Georgia Moffett, two of the stars of the BBC TV series Doctor Who, have become engaged and intend to marry in 2012.
Tennant, 39 – best known for playing the tenth Doctor in the BBC's long-running science-fiction drama – and Moffett, 26, have been going out together since they met on the Doctor Who set in 2008.
Moffett currently holds the distinction of playing two different companions of the Doctor in the TV series. In 2008, she played the Doctor's daughter, Jenny, in a story by Stephen Greenhorn (River City), which was called – appropriately enough – The Doctor's Daughter. Then, in 2009, she played one of the Doctor's companions, Cassie Rice, in Dreamland, an animated story by Phil Ford (New Captain Scarlet).
However, her association with the series is stronger than that. She is the daughter of Peter Davison (who played the fifth Doctor from 1981 to 1984) and Sandra Dickinson (The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy). At one time, during Davison's tenure as the Doctor, Dickinson was rumoured to be set to play his companion, Chloe, in the series, but this did not materialise.
Tennant played the Doctor from 2005 to 2010, and even appeared with Davison's Doctor in 2008, in Time Crash, by Steven Moffat.
According to the Sun, the pair "are making plans to wed on New Year's Day in 2012".
The Sun claims: "They are besotted with each other and can't wait to tie the knot."
Meanwhile, heatworld reckons: "Female (and some male) Doctor Who fans will be sobbing over their sonic screwdrivers now that former Doctor Who David Tennant has announced his engagement to his long-term girlfriend Georgia Moffett."
Keeping it in the TARDIS family
This isn't the first time that a Doctor Who and his companion, so to speak, have married. In 1981, Tom Baker, then the fourth Doctor, married Lalla Ward (his companion, Romana, in the series). Ward is now married to Professor Richard Dawkins.
And from 1955 to 1960, Jon Pertwee was married to Jean Marsh (Upstairs, Downstairs). Their marriage, however, was before either of them appeared in Doctor Who. Marsh played Sara Kingdom – a companion to William Hartnell's first Doctor – in 1965; and Pertwee became the third Doctor in 1970.
