MTV rang in the new year with a ball drop of their own - featuring Snooki, the 'Jersey Shore' firebrand, descending in a Seaside Heights glitzy ball drop.
Comedian Whitney Cummings hosted MTV's New Year's telecast on Friday - a smear of minutes that resided as a cacophony of hoots and near-drunk stand-ins and culminated in the descent of a ball housing "Jersey Shore" star Snooki.
While the MTV coverage was broadcast from New York City's Times Square, where the traditional ball made its usual annual descent, Snooki's ball drop occurred Seaside Heights, New Jersey - far from the action in Manhattan.
Snooki characterized the moment as "frickin awesome," according to Entertainment Weekly, however the Seaside Heights location was not the original choice of the "Jersey Shore" star - as she had originally hoped her ball drop would occur in Times Square.
“It was never intended or requested for Snooki to be in the actual New Year’s Eve Ball in Times Square. The request to have her in a separate ball on a set-back roof came too late and was too impractical to fit in to our outdoor events,” the Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment, partners in the Times Square New Year’s Eve ball-drop party told Entertainment Weeklyin a statement.
The Snooki ball drop appeared to be at most a thirty foot drop, and the pre-taped descent was welcomed by a loose band of cheering onlookers. Snooki danced in the ball with a signature red plastic cup in one hand, as the crowd below counted down the last moments of 2010.
"Aww. Look at her in that ball," Cummings said in the live telecast from Times Square. "Seriously, is that what Times Square was so scared of? Snooki in a ball?"
Cummings then asked the "Jersey Shore" crew about their resolutions before the Snooki ball made it safely to the ground.
The event culminated with Snooki blowing a kiss to the television cameras and saying: "Happy New Year, bitch!"
