article imageBoxing: Donaire stayed too long at the flyweight divisions

By Edwin Ladaga     Dec 30, 2010 in Sports
In an interview with Hardcore Sports Radio, the former IBF flyweight champion shared his thoughts on what motivates him to be a better boxer.
"It is part of my goal to be a champion at different weight classes. I'd like to see how far can I go up in weight- 115, 118, and 122 pounds. It is what drives me. If I stay in 112 lbs, I could be champion at 112 for many many years" answered Nonito, who clearly stated that being a multi-division champion motivates him a lot.
Nonito Donaire is aware that to be the best, you will have to fight the best. When Nonito scored a devastating knockout victory over Darchinyan, he made it known to the boxing world that he'd like to be a unified champion in the flyweight division. For the last two years, he's been calling out the titleholders from the flyweight and superflyweight divisions. None of them were interested in fighting the Filipino Flash.
With no quality opposition at the flyweight category, the Filipino flash move up to the 115 pound division and beat the overweight Rafael Conception to claim the interim championship. He was hoping to have a crack at any of the titleholders in the division but couldn't get any meaningful fights. To his dismay, he ended up fighting journeymen and mediocre opposition.
Two years ago, I had mentioned and will say it again that Donaire's true boxing test will not come in the flyweight nor the superfly weight division. If he wants a challenge and an opponent that will define his career, then the loaded bantamweight is the place to go. His move up the bantamweight division had been a wise decision. His efficient beating of Sidorenko is one of the best boxing performances of this year.
In early 2011, he is scheduled to fight Montiel. A fight that will truly text his boxing skills. Donaire's frame is still too big for the bantamweight division. I hope that he would consider moving up to the 122 pound division after the Montiel fight. In this weight, he will be a treat to anybody.
