article imageOp-Ed: Devil's Night in Detroit (and why it still matters)

By Matt Harding     Dec 13, 2010 in Crime
In 1984, there were approximately 800 arsons on Devil's Night. Now dubbed "Angel's Night," arsons still don't completely cease.
Angel's Night in Detroit isn't as angelic as you may think. As Digital Journalist Laura Trowbridge reported, the 2010 evening showed a 42% increase from 2009 with 169 arsons. Many Detroiters think just because an arson doesn't happen on their block, they don't happen at all. I feel guilty of having done this myself. Until this past Angel's Night.
An abandoned house on my block was torched; four or five fire trucks had to be summoned to put out the blaze. All because somebody wanted to see a house go up in smoke. Events like this have to stop happening! Whoever set the fire is wasting his/her/their own tax dollars, assuming he/she/they pay them.
Detroiters, like other urban citizens, should keep a very keen eye out for arsons. Not just on Angel's Night or Halloween, but all year round. Just because they're not happening around you're neighborhood doesn't mean they're not happening elsewhere.
