London - A Taser and four cartridges went missing after a London police officer drove off with the items on the roof of a police vehicle.
The Metropolitan Police CO19 firearms unit officer has been taken off operational duty and is under investigation, and police are asking anyone who spots the bright yellow weapon to contact them immediately.
A report on the London se1 Community Website stated that the officer had left a briefing at the service's Lambeth Road building between 7 am and 8.30 am on Tuesday when he placed the Taser on the roof of the marked police vehicle in Norfolk Row while preparing to leave. He forgot the weapon on the roof when he drove away.
Around 10 am police realised it was missing and, despite extensive searches, they have been unable to find it.
BBC News reported that the Taser is thought to have fallen off between Norfolk Row and Vauxhall Cross, where the officer stopped for fuel.
The Guardian reported that Scotland Yard said the Directorate of Professional Standards had been informed and an internal investigation was now under way.
