By Samuel Okocha     Dec 5, 2010 in World
Two teenage lovers in the South American country of Guyana hanged themselves. Authorities reportedly said the action was an apparent suicide pact because their parents disapproved of their relationship.
Police in a statement said the bodies of 18-year-old bus driver Avinash Persaud and 17-year-old waitress Kamattie Wilfred were found in an abandoned house in the West Coast Demerara region in northeastern Guyana.
Persaud's brother, Robin told newsmen that the teens ran away from home several days ago because their parents did not want them to be together.
Nearly 200 suicides are said to be reported each year in Guyana. The cases are rampant in rural farming areas with the Health Ministry studying ways to reduce the rate in the country with less than a million population.
