Madrid - An off-duty member of Spain’s National Police became a hero after rescuing a man who lost his balance on the platform and fell on the tracks at Puerta del Angel Station of the Madrid Subway.
An off-duty policeman saved the life of a man fallen on the tracks of the Madrid metro by coming to his rescue within a second of the victim being run over by a train, as can be seen in the video recorded by security cameras in the station. The National Police has only issued one piece of information on its agent who has chosen to remain anonymous: he was identified as Angel.
Angel, 30, has been a member of the National Police for just two months and he was off duty at the time of the incident, according to newspaper El País (in Spanish). He had come to the subway station with his girlfriend after doing some Christmas shopping. The alarmed voices of other metro passengers on the platform alerted him that a man had fallen on the tracks.
The policeman said he did not think twice when he noticed the man had fallen on the tracks and was unable to get up and move away. The rescue took a split-second at the time the train was coming into the station and could not stop despite the frantic screams and gestures of other subway users on the platform. "I ran from the end of the platform, I took off my jacket and jumped. I saw the train coming close and dragged him just in time." Angel said that he stayed attentive on the other side of the tracks, to ensure that no other train arrived on the opposite side and with the aid of some passengers who were on the platform, hoisted the fallen man to safety. The rescued man, a 41-year-old Spanish national, has only been identified as José. He was taken to a hospital where he is recovering from minor injuries. The cause of the man falling from the platform on the tracks had not been disclosed.
Puerta del Angel Station is part of Line 6 of the Madrid Subway System. This station is located under Paseo de Extremadura, not far from the Bridge of Segovia, the oldest bridge in the city, built during the XVI century over the Manzanares River.
