article imageOp-Ed: Stop Picking on Rush Limbaugh

By William Charles Baker     Dec 4, 2010 in Entertainment
Hero worship by some and anger by others does not stop the broadcast of his ideas across the air waves. When the political system wants to silence him and crush free speech that is all the more reason to keep listening.
Every afternoon at 12:06pmest my icon is clicked for internet access to Rush Limbaugh and his syndicated radio talk show on the Excellence in Broadcasting (EIB) network. Why I listen to Rush used to be a mystery to me. When I worked a regular 9 to 5 job there was not a convenient or regular time to break away to listen to regular radio. Internet access did not exist because of security regulations and building location and structure did not provide clear listening on portable radio devices. Primarily though I had never heard anything other than his name and opinions on his point of view. However when I retired and decided to become a full time writer the opportunity to work my days around content and media programs gave me the opportunity to be a regular listener.
It is obvious why he is one of the top hosts in the country. As serious and legitimate and angry as he sometimes becomes he is not self serving in a serious way. As a pundit he also proclaims his failings and battle with weight his devotion as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan and his concerns for the country. Just when you thought you had an idea of where he was going with his remarks something different is revealed. You have to be on your toes to appreciate his wit and sarcasm. Why should we fear that which is not what we may believe. Maybe as he would say there is a teachable moment at hand. But when the media turns against itself and wants to shut down conservative views we are one step closer to loss of freedom of speech.
The constant critique of the facts or content or point of view is not important to me. Whether he should be allowed to buy a football team is a spicy topic to while away a lunch hour sitting in my car with a sandwich. It is dangerous to only hear one side of an issue. Without comparison you can’t tell hot from cold or right from wrong. Throughout this past year that I have listened he has never impressed me as a danger or having some clandestine mission to change the course of politics. Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer and a very good one. I listened and like many more was hooked even though I am ideologically on different grounds with many of his points of view.
Hero worship by some and anger by others does not stop the broadcast of his ideas across the air waves. When the political system wants to silence him and crush free speech that is all the more reason to keep listening.
