A Wisconsin man disturbed about Bristol Palin's appearance on Dancing with the Stars became so enraged after watching her routine, he grabbed a shotgun, fired a shot at his television and said he was fed up with politics and Palin wasn't a good dancer.
Steven Cowan, 67, then pointed the gun at his wife, Janice Cowan, and threatened to shoot her, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Department.
Mrs. Cowan fled the home and called police and reported her husband was intoxicated, armed, and threatening to commit suicide and that he suffers from a bipolar disorder.
The Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Team and Hostage Negotiation Team responded to the scene and after an all-night standoff Cowan surrendered without further incident.
Janice Cowan told police her husband came home around 6.30pm Monday, after drinking at a local bar, but that she didn't know if he was drunk, a sheriff's detective wrote in the criminal complaint. He has a beer with dinner and then sat down to watch Dancing with the Stars.
When Ms Palin, the daughter of former vice presidential candidate-turned- Republican celebrity Sarah Palin, began her routine, Mr Cowan jumped up and began swearing, saying something like "The (expletive) politics".
His wife said he was upset that a political figure's daughter was dancing on TV even though he felt she didn't have talent.
She told officers her husband left the living room and reappeared 20 minutes later with his shotgun, "raging" with his face bright red, and blasted the TV.
She said her husband pointed the gun at her and told her to go get his pistols. She said he threatened to kill himself if she returned with anyone else.
She left the home and called police from a nearby lawyer's office, according to the complaint notes.
"He scared the bejebees out of me," Janice Cowan told deputies.
Janice Cowan told officers that about 15 years ago her husband had threatened her with a machete when he couldn't find some ammunition and has threatened to shoot one of their cows. Cowan's daughter had recently taken his handguns away from him, she added.
She said he was under stress because of financial reasons, saying a doctor helping him with his mental health problems had suggested he temporarily turn over control of his rental properties to the family's lawyer.
Like many DWTS fans, Steven Cowan has been perplexed by Bristol Palin’s curious ability to keep advancing in TV’s "Dancing with the Stars" competition, according to The Smoking Gun. But unlike all other DWTS viewers, who continue to suffer through her performances, he responded with rage.
Cowan's behaviour resulted in being booked into the Dane County Jail on charges of Domestic Disorderly Conduct and 2nd Degree Reckless Endangerment of Safety, according to the press release from the Town of Vermont. He is facing up to 10 years in jail.
Fans of the show are divided on their opinion of why Palin, who consistently lands at the bottom of the judges' leaderboard, has been able to advance each week to the next round, according to the LA Times.
Some have suggested that voters - particularly supporters of her mother - have been voting in blocks and manipulating the system. Sarah Palin's denies any involvement with her daughter's appearance and success on the popular show.
"Let the conspiracy theories begin," said the Wall Street Journal.
