article imageOp-Ed: The Facebook Phenomenon: Part I

By Matt Harding     Nov 14, 2010 in Internet
If you haven't yet heard of Facebook, you're clearly under the age of one or over the age of 100. Or, you simply haven't been living on planet earth.
Facebook.com is a place where friends, family members, and colleagues can communicate. But, it's much more than that. The social networking site has become a global phenomenon. Facebook has been portrayed on South Park and is the inspiration behind the movie, The Social Network. In current news, Facebook is even considering launching its own e-mail service.
Over 500 million people have a Facebook; if you don't, you're seriously missing out.
Here are six reasons why you should have a Facebook:
6. It's a great place to share pictures with your friends. For instance, I met Former President Bill Clinton at a rally for a gubernatorial race. I took a picture with him. I immediately thought, "I'm putting this on Facebook when I get home." Surely enough, I did. It's so much quicker than e-mail and is in my pictures for all of my friends to see.
5. It's a great place to show off your personality. This is possible through your 'Likes' and bio, as well as many other features of your profile.
4. It's a great place to get involved. Start a group that could make a difference such as Help the Homeless.
3. It's a great place to network. It is, after all, a social networking site. For myself, trying to start up in the field of journalism, Facebook has been a great place to post my Digital Journal articles. Now, my friends can regularly read my writing without me telling them to. They can simply click my link.
2. It's a great place to reconnect with old friends. Get in touch with friends from 'back in the day.' See where they've ended up. It's pretty great!
1. It's a great place to get useful information. Post your status as "Which concerts should I attend this summer?" Or, "Where can I find the best BBQ for dinner?" You'll get a ton of responses from your friends whose opinions you value most.
Facebook is nothing short of spectacular. The tool just may be the most useful on the internet.
