Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore involved in NCAA violations charge

By Kim I. Hartman     Nov 1, 2010 in Sports
Des Moines - The University of Iowa has admitted NCAA recruiting violations that involve husband-wife film stars Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore. The violations involve the Hawkeye men's basketball staff but took place during a Iowa football game last month.
The Des Moines Register reported Sunday that Iowa athletic officials have told the NCAA they allowed two recruits to meet Kutcher, Moore and ex-Hawkeye basketball stars Dean Oliver and Reggie Evans prior to a home football game last month.
Kutcher, an Iowa native and Hawkeyes fan and donor, is considered a representative of the university's athletic interests, as are Oliver and Evans. The NCAA prohibits potential recruits from having any contact with such individuals as a result of the undue influence they could have on the recruiting process.
The university's report to the NCAA indicates that new head basketball coach Fran McCaffery's recruits met with former Hawkeye basketball players Reggie Evans and Dean Oliver after a pick-up game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena - then met Kutcher and Moore in a suite at the football stadium later that day, according to the report in the Des Moines Register.
Mark Abbott, a senior associate athletic director, said the University of Iowa is awaiting the NCAA's response to the school's internal investigation.
Abbott said he did not believe the violations would preclude the Hawkeyes from continuing to recruit either athlete, although the final decision will be made by the NCAA.
"The university is remorseful that these violations occurred," Fred Mims, associate athletic director, wrote in a letter on Oct. 1 to the NCAA. "We believe they were the result of sloppy management by our basketball staff,
"The university believes that violations did occur," his letter says. "These violations were inadvertent and steps have been taken to ensure it will not recur."
A search-able copy of the NCAA letter to the University of Iowa is available at the Des Moines Register.
NCAA officials have the authority to impose no penalty, or penalties that can range from precluding a school from recruiting an athlete to limiting the number of scholarships that can be awarded in that sport in any year. Fines from $500 to $5,000 may also be imposed by the NCAA.
