Musician Jon Bon Jovi, at 48 years old, says he is a bit overweight, drinking too much and bored to tears. The lead singer of Bon Jovi has been performing with the band which bears his name since he was 21.
Bon Jovi, who was born John Francis Bongiovi in1962, in New Jersey, is currently taking part in a world tour called The Circle and has a second Greatest Hits album released on November 1.
"I'm vain inasmuch as I think I'm terribly out of shape right now,” he told a reporter for The Observer. “If you want to be perfectly honest, I'm 10lb overweight and I'm drinking too much and I'm bored to tears."
He said that while he is “not the fat Elvis” and might look OK, he is “coming to real good terms with getting older."
Bon Jovi admitted that he was annoyed about the fact that he was a pin-up when he was young, but now sees it as a wonderful compliment.
On the subject of age he said: "You become that thing that you looked at your parents and the older people in your life, and said: 'No! I don't want to live to be that old! I don't want to!' But it's actually… much better than dying. And there are too many people that are my age, that are dying. God, I didn't want to be that! That would be awful!
“You can see why people get fat, grow old, give up! Because every day is: get up, do the same mundane shit. When you don't know anything more, and you don't see anything more, and you're not willing to open up your eyes and take a step in another direction… that treadmill would make any young man old."
When he was 21 he formed Bon Jovi with Richie Sambora, David Bryan and Tico Torres.
They released 11 studio albums and performed more than 2,700 concerts in more than 50 countries
Jon Bon Jovi appreciates that commercial success has provided a platform for many other things that have become a part of his life.
“I don't know that I would have had the same entrée to presidential politics had I not been as successful in my day job," he said.
He toured on behalf of John Kerry in 2004, performing duets with Richie Sambora at rallies. In 2009 he campaigned on behalf of Obama, and performed at his inauguration ceremony.
He also launched the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, which is dedicated to tackling poverty.
He and his wife Dorothea have been married since 1989 and have four children.
