article imageToronto rally against gun violence at Yonge-Dundas Square Special

By KJ Mullins     Oct 31, 2010 in Crime
Toronto - A shoe. For some in Toronto a shoe waiting to be filled by a loved one is a constant reminder of the violence on our streets. Today at Yonge-Dundas Square the Stop the Violence rally took place with those shoes front and center.
Starting at Queen's Park the rally and march moved through the streets of Toronto to create a noise and awareness that for far too many of our citizens violence ended a life. The theme of "who will fill these shoes" was a just one. Shoes are for the living and for those who must go on when a bullet takes away a loved one.
The chair of the event, Audette Shephard, knows of the violence that happens in Toronto far to well. Her son Justin Shephard, 19, was murdered in 2001. She helped to found UMOVE, United Mothers Opposing Violence Everywhere the same year.
As those attending the rally raised their voices and whistles to bring awareness to their cause those on the stage spoke about the need to end the violence in Toronto, to bring peace back and to make the city safe for all.
The shoes that graced the steps to the stage spoke volumes in their silence. They would continue to go unused, their owners no longer of this earth. Those who go on, who look at those shoes everyday have to keep the message that violence must be stopped, that our children's lives are at stake.
