article imageStephen Fry says women willing to pay for relationships with sex

By Lynn Curwin     Oct 31, 2010 in World
Stephen Fry has surprised many people when he stated that he feels sorry for straight men because women only have sex with them in order to have a relationship.
The 53-year-old gay broadcaster and writer, in an interview in the November issue of Attitude magazine, said that if women wanted sex as much as men, there would be cruising areas for straight people, much like the ones where gay people meet.
“I think most straight men feel they disgust women,” Pink News quoted him as saying. “They find it difficult to believe that women are as interested in sex as they are. For good reason. If women liked sex as much as men there would be straight cruising areas in the way there are gay cruising areas.
“I feel sorry for straight men. The only reason women will have sex with them is that sex is the price they are willing to pay for a relationship with a man, which is what they want. They want a boyfriend and then they want commitment.
"Of course, a lot of women will deny this and say, 'Oh no, but I love sex, I love it!' But do they go around having it the way that gay men do?
“Gay men are the perfect acid test. If they want to get their rocks off, they go into a park where they know they can do it.”
Rosie Boycott, journalist and feminist, said women are just as capable as men are of enjoying sex, but they don’t go cruising because they don’t need to.
Susie Orbach, psychotherapist and feminist campaigner, was quoted by The Guardian as saying: "I'm really intrigued by his notion that men's sexuality is disgusting in some way. Why would he believe that women could be so disgusted by men? Does he think there is something disgusting about sex?"
Paul Flynn, the journalist who spoke to Fry, said he found it puzzling that a homosexual man felt he was on authority on female sexuality.
"Gay men debating the whys and wherefores of female sexuality… for very obvious reasons, we can hardly claim to be experts," he told The Guardian. "I'm more interested in his feeling that straight men are somehow to be pitied. That's quite a radical standpoint."
Fry is in a relationship with Steven Webb, a 25-year-old actor.
