Redwood, California - On September 6, 2010 Oracle hardware server giant and company consumer announced the hiring of former Hewlett Packard Chief Executive Officer Mark Hurd.
Mark had been with the mostly small pc producer HP since April of 2005 and NCR Corp. before that. During his time with Hp he was able to cut costs that translated into 15,000 people being let go with another 25,000 slated for 2011. But, Mr. Hurd was only getting started, taking on HP's biggest rival IBM. With a finely tuned sales team he targeted IBM's accounts with a vengeance. claiming to be $20 billion bigger than IBM in a $1.7 trillion dollar technology market.
In addition to these changes, Hurd also cut a $250 million dollar deal in January with software giant Microsoft to develop a hardware/software development program to operate in the new landscape of cloud computing. Time will tell if HP and Microsoft will continue with this since Mark's departure.
It's without question Mark Hurd is a power player who's playing for keeps. His hard noise management style has proven to get the kind of results that can be counted in the bottom line.
The circumstances surrounding his departure from HP are what scandals are made of. Hurd called on the carpet for sexual harassment allegations filed by an executive events coordinator and former actress Jodie Foster, who once had carried on a relationship with Hurd, who eventually settled with the woman out of court. With further investigation by HP into Hurd's affairs HP found what they called inaccurate expense reports filed by Hurd.
Over at Oracle Chief Larry Ellison was none too pleased with the circumstances surrounding the firing of Mark Hurd stating in the October issue of Forbes magazine, "HP was making it virtually impossible for the two companies to work together."
This reporter contacted Oracle's Corporate Communication Officer Deborah Hellinger, in which she cordially replied "no comment" to questions surrounding the circumstances Mark Hurd let HP and if the were a t all concerned with the blow back of the events.
However, Mark Hurd joining Oracle gives them the inside track to ways of operations inside HP which is the number one advantage when putting together a marketing plan to combat HP's counter attack. With Mark gone, it is time for HP to change the locks and the plays if they have any hop of remaining on a competitive level with Oracle.
