Halifax - Someone has been secretly filming women from behind as they walk around the area of Dalhousie University, and then posting the footage on YouTube. Police in Halifax are now reviewing the videos.
“It appears that the video camera is obscured from sight, possibly in a kitbag,” stated a Halifax Regional Police press release. “The videos are disconcerting, and investigators are attempting to identify the person responsible for filming and posting the videos, and if criminal charges are warranted.”
The person posting the videos goes by the name LeggingSpy. The filming is done both outside and inside of buildings, often as the person with the camera walks behind females along a street.
Most of those filmed were wearing tight, stretchy trousers or leggings.
Dalhousie spokesman Charles Crosby said a female student saw herself in a video and told university security staff on Monday.
An email was then sent to students, letting them know what had taken place and advising them to be alert. The university also asked police to investigate.
"The nature of the video is an invasion of individual privacy, as well as being offensive in its content toward the subject of the recording," CBC News reported that Mike Burns, director of security at Dalhousie, said in the email sent to students.
Security staff believe the footage was shot around the Studley campus this autumn. The university is checking on whether it is possible to have the videos removed from YouTube.
Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter said investigators have two main methods to try to track down the person who did the filming.
“There’s the potential of having the information obtained through the internet site,” The Chronicle Herald quoted him as saying. “We’ll be looking to see if there’s any video surveillance in and around the university that may help identify who the person is.”
The Chronicle Herald says some of the videos are disturbing and refuses to name the user or the videos in their story, although they do provide a description of what is seen in one of the most revealing posts.
There are similar videos posted by other users on YouTube.
