article imageGallup: Obama descends to new job approval low

By Michael Krebs     Oct 21, 2010 in Politics
A new poll released by Gallup reflects President Obama's approval ratings in a state of constant decline, enduring seven straight quarterly drops since he took office.
President Obama's job approval ratings have experienced a stunning and constant seven-quarter decline, falling most recently to just 44.7 percent, according to Gallup.
With mid-term elections just two weeks away and many Democratic incumbents facing considerably difficult terms for re-election, the continual plummet of Obama's job approval is certainly cause for long term concern among Democratic strategists who are already looking ahead to the 2012 presidential election.
Upon arriving at the Oval Office, President Obama had a commanding 63 percent approval rating - extended over the period of his first quarter in office. It has been declining ever since.
Gallup's methodology employs a daily survey, including interviews with more than 90,000 Americans - so the sample size is respectable.
"With the midterm elections less than two weeks away, Obama's diminished public support means the Democratic Party is vulnerable to heavy losses in Congress," Gallup's web site states. "The president's party has lost an average of 36 U.S. House seats when his approval rating is below 50%."
However, other presidents - most notably Clinton and Reagan - were delivering similarly poor numbers in their seventh measured quarter. Given this, the news for President Obama may not be all that grim.

Rasmussen Reports shows similar discontent in President Obama and his policies. 28 percent of likely voters strongly approve of Obama's work as president.
