Net zero office building a first for Canada

By KJ Mullins     Oct 12, 2010 in Environment
Markham - The Del Ridge Corporate Centre in Markham, Ontario will be the first and only office building in Canada that has a zero carbon footprint. Using the sun, wind and geothermal energy the building will be cutting edge.
"Del Ridge is committed to introducing any practical and safe idea to help us all reach a point of sustainability." says Dave de Sylva, partner at Del Ridge Homes in a press release. Adding "We've shown how passionate we are about this in our communities, now it's time to walk the walk with our new corporate head offices and take it to the next level."
The building will use an enclosed ramp for underground parking so that the ramp does not have to be heated in the winter.
Insulated concrete forms used in the construction of the new building will mean minimal energy transfer. Light will come into the building through triple glazed low E2 argon windows. The climate within the structure will be controlled with geothermal heating and cooling. On the roof will be a large 40 kilowatt solar array.
What makes this project even more cutting edge is the Del Ridge Energy Farm, a 50 acre farm containing a 1500kw horizontal turbine will be tied into the building.
The corporate building is not the only one for Del Ridge when it comes to leaving a small or zero carbon footprint. In Milton a new condominium is going up that will also be a net zero building. GreenLife condominium just began construction. Next year GreenLife -West Side, consisting of a 226 unit condominium facing the Niagara Escarpment and walking distance to downtown Milton will be launched.
The GreenLife project will be tied into a remote wind farm near Georgian Bay which will have a 500KW turbine (one of three) producing 1.5 GWh/yr with allocation to the GreenLife condo, substantially more energy than the required 900,000 kWh/year. The extra energy not only will be good for the environment but allow the building to have about $120, 000 in extra income each year.
