article imageFreddie Roach grants Manny Pacquiao weekend training break

By Leo Reyes     Oct 3, 2010 in Sports
Manny Pacquiao got what he wanted from his trainer Freddie Roach when the the four-time BWAA trainer of the year gave him a break to be with his family over the weekend.
Pacquiao had a late celebration with his daughter Princess who just observed her fourth birthday the other day. He was also reported to have attended a social function in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Likewise Pacquiao's childhood friend and assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez was given a pass by the renowned coach to celebrate his birthday with his family in his hometown in Bicol in southern part of Luzon island in the Philippines.
Prior to these breaks, Freddie Roach has allowed Pacquiao to play basketball and do some swimming exercises.
These deviations from the otherwise strict training schedules indicate that Freddie Roach has become so overconfident Pacquiao will beat Margarito even if he does less than 160 rounds of sparring as originally planned.
During the training and preparations for Pacquiao's recent fight with Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey, Freddie Roach was very strict with his training schedules and hated unnecessary distractions.
Any deviations or distractions that came in the way during the training have irritated Roach especially when friends and politicians would come to see Pacquiao while on training in Manila and in Baguio City.
Surprisingly, Freddie Roach is taking it easy this time and appeared confident during the first few days of training in Baguio City.
“We know how to beat this guy (Margarito). We have a plan A, a plan B, and sometimes a plan C. If we don’t do it here in the gym, we’ll never do it in the fight,” Roach told Ring Magazine’s Ted Lerner.
“We cover all our bases in the gym. Manny understands the game plan and he follows it completely, but sometimes when a fighter gets hit and gets angry, he will exchange. But that’s something I like. That’s in his heart. That’s what makes Manny Pacquiao, Manny Pacquiao.”
So confident was Roach on how Pacquiao was responding to the training regimen, he gave him permission to fly to Manila Saturday afternoon right after sparring to be with his family in Sta. Rosa in Laguna on the occasion his daughter Princess’ birthday celebration, Philboxing's Eddie Alinea wrote.
If there’s anything that amaze Roach more, it is Pacquiao’s big heart and work ethics, which he said always exceed his expectations despite having been together for nine years. Alinea added.
The world-famous trainer must have carefully studied Margarito's strength and weaknesses. He knew Pacquiao will beat the guy even without the kind of intense training they used to do during his previous fights.
But since they are barely on their second week of training, it is possible Roach will revert to his usual style and may even order the closure of the Gym to avoid unnecessary distractions from the public and the press.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao's six footer sparring partner Michael Medina got what he least expected when the Filipino boxer almost sent him to dreamland during their sparring session last Saturday.
Pacquiao though was slightly injured and has suffered minor bruises in his left eyebrow during the 20-minute skirmish.
Pacquiao and his entourage will resume training on Monday.
