Detroit - An elderly Detroit couple was approached in front of their home and offered free meals by two men in a Meals on Wheels truck earlier this week. The supposed free meal quickly turned into a robbery and assault.
A Meals on Wheels truck was stolen on the East side of Detroit early Thursday morning while the driver was inside a building delivering food. The thieves then took the truck to a more affluent neighborhood on Detroit's West side, looking to make another robbery.
Harris and Laverne Blow, both 73, were arriving home around 10:00 AM Thursday morning when they were approached by two men offering free meals to them.
Laverne told MyFox Detroit that she told the men that they didn't subscribe to that program, but the driver got out of the Meals on Wheels truck, taking a meal to her husband.
When the man was close enough to her husband, he punched Harris Blow in the face, kicked him and took his wallet. Meanwhile, the other man hit Laverne and stole her purse.
One of the men stole the Blow's car while the other drove away in the Meals on Wheels truck.
According to Action News, Detroit Police arrested three suspects Thursday night. Both the Meals on Wheels truck and the Blow's car were recovered.
Harris was taken to the hospital for his injuries, but came home later the same day with a sprained arm and black eye, but they are both thankful to be alive.
Harris told ClickonDetroit: “There are many different reasons that these things happen, and of course I’m going to pray for them because they actually need help.”
Laverne said: “I’m still traumatized, I haven’t gotten to the point where I feel anything about them yet.”
