Detroit - In a crime of passion, an 89-year-old man, with no criminal history, went to a birthday party and allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.
R. B. Theus, 89, of Warren, Michigan, went to a birthday party in Detroit a couple Saturdays ago. He allegedly got into a fight with his ex-girlfriend's new 48-year-old boyfriend during the party.
The ex-girlfriend, who remains unidentified, told Fox 2 News Detroit: "He came up and hit him, and then he jumped up and they got to tussling over the gun. Everybody was running. A gunshot and the gun waving and stuff.
"It could've killed him, me and the rest of my family. We all were out there."
Theus had the gun illegally, police said.
According to the Detroit News, Theus was charged with "assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to commit great bodily harm, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, felonious assault and felony firearm."
Theus faces a preliminary hearing on October 1.
The victim was shot in the chest and taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he was listed in temporary serious condition.
