Will and Jada Smith's birthday request? Donate to Charity: Water

By KJ Mullins     Sep 22, 2010 in Environment
Will and Jada Smith are celebrating their September birthdays together, and this year they are doing something "radical"-- they are asking people to donate to Charity: Water.
Jada celebrated her birthday on September 18 and Will's is on Friday. They discovered that just $20 provides clean water for one person for 20 years. Will is asking his friends, families and fans to give $42 since it's his 42nd year while Jada isn't asking for a set number.
"We believe every person on the planet should have access to clean drinking water."
The Smiths will also be heading to Africa. The top three fundraisers will be joining them.
The couple gave to Africa last year with their friend to visit their first well that was built. The community that they gave to had in the past had to walk hours to have water that was not clean. Their lack of water affected farming and sending their children to school. One well changed the life of an entire village.
In areas that lack water people have to carry it home from a long distance. Often they use a Jerry can which weighs 40 pounds when it is full. Women and children are the ones who carry these heavy water containers home after walking for miles both ways. The walk makes them weak, the walk home can be to much for them.
All money that is donated to Charity: Water goes to providing those in need with water.
"100% of the money is used for project equipment, materials and paying local drillers. Communities contribute labor, materials and time to complete their water project. In 12-18 months, we prove the completed project using GPS and photos so you see where your money went."-Charity: Water
At this time there has been $37,261 raised and the total is climbing.
