Santiago - Colombian airport and immigration authorities are making adjustments today to intensify controls at air terminals after a young boy went through the complete security scheme and travelled to Chile without passport or ticket.
Sources from the Department of Administrative Security (DAS-Secret Police) reported on Tuesday that, in coordination with the Civil Aeronautic Authorities, will make the necessary adjustments to avoid a repeat of the episode.
The 15-year-old boy, who had originally planned to travel to Mexico but at the last minute decided to travel to Chile instead, passed through all six security controls at Eldorado International Airport in Bogotá last Saturday, without a passport, boarding pass or airline ticket to board a flight of Colombian Avianca Airlines that was departing to Santiago de Chile.
Santiago Castro, the head of Civil Aeronautics in Santiago, considered the incident as "unacceptable" and announced that the agency will request sanctions to be applied to both the airline and El Dorado International Airport for allowing the child to travel in the plane without a ticket and travel documents.
The undocumented kid carried only a few Colombian pesos in his pocket and at his arrival in Santiago, when asked about his reason for travelling to Chile, declared that he was to visit with friends he had contacted through social media in the Internet.
Chilean immigration authorities contacted Colombian police asking them to get in touch with the boy’s father who travelled to Santiago to take his deported son back to Bogotá. The father indicated that the boy left the country on the same day he was supposed to bring home his school report card.
The boy’s mother Nubia E. Ramírez in an interview with Caracol TV of Colombia (in Spanish) declared: “He is a very clever, very ingenious kid”
The ability of the child to go unchecked through several airport and airline barriers has increased concerns about the vulnerability of airport security and the risk that weapons or dangerous explosives may get undetected into passenger aircraft.
